This was very special. As part of Independent Venue Week, Red Rum Club played Sidney and Matilda in Sheffield on 29-1-26
I saw and photographed (see pictures here) RRC at YNot in the summer on the main stage, so to see them in a 300 capacity venue was incredibly special. It was sweaty, it was a stripped back. It was a joy. This evening showed us why we need independent venue week and the music venue trust. Small venues is where music starts. It needs protecting and nurturing. Most of the room were closer to the stage than you would be if you were on the barrier at an arena and we cant lose that connection. To be so close to the band, to be able to see their faces, their expressions is something more people need to experience. During ‘Would You Rather Be Lonely’ Fran walked into the front of the crowd and I can honestly say that him singing, while standing that close to me was something I will not forget!
Fran was on form and enjoyed chatting to the crowd and updating us on what’s be happing in the world of RRC. He told us that they had signed with a label in the states and they would be using the money from the tour to get the band over to the states. They all looked genuinely happy to be there and thanked everyone for the ongoing supporting and helping them take Merseyside Mariachi to the USA.
When it came time for the encore, Fran pointed out that it was impossible for the band to leave the stage, so we should pretend they have and got us all to chant ‘one more song’, which the crowd eagerly did. We were then treated to Eighteen, Would You Rather Be Lonely?, Angeline & Vanilla
